During war times, inventors and designers were often asked to come up with a solution which will improve the way of warfare. On the other hand, there were handymen and company owners as well who weren`t asked to do so, but felt the need to contribute to their nation by offering products that will enhance the way of warfare which will lead to victory. To that effect, we decided to present you a video that features one rather odd vehicle which has a lot to do with what we`ve said.
More precisely, we are referring to the most famous British SUV, an old school Land Rover, which this time is equipped with Cuthbertson tracks! The story about this type of vehicle dates back from around 1958 and comes from a small town in Scotland, named Biggar. Namely, James A. Cuthbertson realized his idea about the triangle tracked Land Rover, thus these tracks are named after him.
This vehicle was created with a goal to go further in harsh off-road conditions than the standard Land Rover, and fortunately for the creator, the goal was met! Like many other invention, the Cuthbertson tracks also have their advantages and disadvantages. The #1 advantage was that the ground pressure the SUV creates was significantly diminished, making it the perfect off-road vehicle especially for wet and marshy soil. Au contraire, the main disadvantage was that it was not able to cross steep banks.
Also, its height represented both a pro and a con at the same time. While ground clearance has been improved, this modified old school Land Rover lacked stability. As a matter of fact, you can notice all this by watching this short video, albeit it is recorded on solid ground. There were only 15 made in total at the beginning, with the last three believed to have been produced at the beginning of the 70s.
