There is a new machine, a robot with an appropriate name, CubeStormer II, Arm powered and Lego constructed, that can solve the well known, IQ examination test, Rubik’s Cube, in a matter of seconds. In London offices` of Wired.co.uk, in a presence of the people from the Guinness Book of World Records, this fantastic machine has set a new record of incredible 5.27 seconds, which beats off the previous record for massive 58.73 seconds that was set about two years ago.
This `incredibly intelligent` and fast robot is creation of David Gilday and Mike Dobson, who were initially competing each other for the world record, but made a smart move and decided to team up, and the final result is CubeStormer II – the fastest Rubik’s Cube solver in the world ever!
As the guys themselves are saying, they were inspired from watching other robots on the internet, that were solving the cubes, and the two of them started to work on their own robots. David had his SpeedCuber and Mike was working on the one called CubeStormer. Together, combining their creativity in the construction and software speed, they came up with CubeStormer II. Built and constructed from four Lego Mindstrom NXY kits and controlled by android application that is running on Samsung Galaxy S II, it takes photos from each side of the box and than finds the most effective way to solve the problem – making each side to show only in one color. This is how it looks:
