This actually happened in Italy and these car drivers and truckers experienced a powerful F4 tornado in very close proximity. It all lasted about 1 minute and then the tornado passes and the motorists continue on. So, if you are on the road and if you see the tornado in the distance in front of you, you should change the course and you should immediately drive to find a sturdy shelter as soon as possible.
Truck stops, restaurants, stores and you should move in to the cellar, basement or rooms without any windows might be very good shelters.
However, if you are stuck in very heavy traffic and you can drive far away then you should cover and duck in a low spot or a ditch but as far as possible. In the case you are forced to stay in the car you should keep your seat belt on and cover your head with a blanked or a jacket in order to protect it from a broken glass.
