2013 Hyundai Elantra Sedan With IIHS Top Safety Pick+!

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra Sedan was the only Korean car to receive the highest scores from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety`s (IIHS) as the TOP SAFETY PICK+. The 2014 Kia Forte and Kia Soul failed at the testing. IIHS rates the vehicles in front crash, small overlap front crash, rollover test and side impact, seat/head restraints for neck injuries protection in rear impacts, occupant protection in four out of five evaluations as well as acceptable score in the fifth test. The “+” indicates an acceptable performance in the small overlap test.

Structure Measures!

The space of the driver space wasn’t maintained well, with the lower interior maximum intrusion of 22 cm at the lower hinge pillar. 18 cm was measured at the upper interior intrusion at upper hinge pillar and 15 to 17 cm at instrument panel and 11 cm push back experienced the steering column.

Restraints and Dummy Kinematics!

The head was protected by the frontal airbag and slid off to the left side. The seat belt got forward excursion of the head and torso of dummy. The side curtain airbags deployed well with the sufficient forward coverage of the head and the side seat airbag also deployed well.

Injury Measures!

After the test the Institute considered low neck bending and head injury measures in combination with head engagement with the front as well with the side airbags. However, the head and neck injury risk was rated as good.

David Zuby, The Chief Research Officer at IIHS said that coverage of the side curtain airbag in the 2013 Hyundai Elantra Sedan helped the vehicle to earn an acceptable rating in the small overlap front test.
